Reporting & Insights
Reporting — called Insights in the app — is where you see how learning is going: who’s active, what’s getting completed, what’s overdue, how assessments are moving, and what your AI usage costs. Every figure resolves through one governed metric, so the same number means the same thing on an admin’s screen, an instructor’s screen, a learner’s, and a guardian’s.
This works the same whether you run corporate training, a customer academy, a university course, or a school.
What this does
Section titled “What this does”Insights turns the activity across your organization into a small set of certified reports and headline numbers you can trust. You can read the ready-made reports, ask a question in plain language, pin what matters to one of your own boards, and export any of it to CSV. Learners and guardians get their own read-only slice of the same numbers.
Two entry points appear in your navigation when the module is on:
- Insights — the hub: headline numbers, the “Ask your data” bar, and the certified reports catalogue.
- My Boards — a list of your own private boards of pinned reports, one row per board.
The Insights page
Section titled “The Insights page”The hub leads with the Ask your data bar, then a row of headline numbers — time on task, active learners, completion rate, completed courses, overdue required work, and AI spend — followed by an AI cost-to-outcome figure (spend per completed course), a 30-day activity trend, and the certified reports catalogue.
A missing value shows as —, never a confident 0, so a failed or empty query never reads as “nothing happened.”
Certified reports
Section titled “Certified reports”The catalogue is a fixed set of vetted reports, each marked Certified. Open one to see its live chart, a provenance footer (see Why a number may be hidden), an Add to board button, and an Export menu. The current set covers:
| Report | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Completion rate | Share of active enrolments that reached completed |
| Overdue & compliance | Required enrolments past their due date |
| Active learners — daily | Distinct learners active per day, last 30 days |
| Time on task — daily | Total learning time per day, last 30 days |
| Enrolments by status | Completed enrolments broken down by state |
| Enrolment funnel | Learners reaching each stage, from enrol to complete |
| Seat utilisation | Share of capped seats taken across capped offerings |
| Grading queue | Submitted attempts awaiting grading |
| Attempts by status | All learner attempts by grading status |
| Item completions by module | Completed learnable items grouped by module |
| Credentials issued | Credentials awarded to learners |
| AI cost by model | AI spend per model your organization uses |
| Wellbeing caseload | Open cases and how many are past SLA — case lifecycle only |
Which reports are useful depends on your role: instructors lean on grading queue, attempts, and completions; admins on funnel, seats, compliance, and cost. Every report is still scoped to what you’re allowed to see. Wellbeing caseload only shows figures to people who manage wellbeing cases — everyone else sees an empty report, not an error.
Ask your data
Section titled “Ask your data”The Ask your data bar lets you type a question in plain language — “Active learners by day over the last 30 days”, “Completion rate by program”, “AI cost by model” — and get a chart back with a short plain-English summary.
- The answer comes with Explore more chips that tweak it instantly (change the chart type, add a breakdown) without asking again.
- You can Add to board or Export the answer like any other report.
- AI-built answers are always labelled Ungoverned (AI) — they’re a fast way to explore, not a certified number. For figures you’ll report on, prefer a certified report.
- The AI proposes a report; Lurno runs it under your own permissions, so an answer can never show you data you aren’t allowed to see. If a question can’t be answered it says so and suggests the nearest thing it can show.
My Boards
Section titled “My Boards”My Boards in your navigation lists your boards — one row each — and expands when you’re on one. A board is a private page of pinned reports; you fill it by clicking Add to board on a certified report or an “Ask your data” answer. You don’t have to set one up first: pinning your first report creates a board for you if you have none. From then on you always have at least one, because Lurno won’t let you delete the last one.
Creating, renaming and deleting:
- New board sits at the bottom of the list. Give it a Board name, then Create board — Lurno opens the new board straight away.
- Hover or tab to a board row to reveal its actions menu. Rename opens the name dialog on the current name; Save name applies it.
- Delete in the same menu confirms first — Delete this board? — and, if the board has reports on it, spells out that they’ll go with it but that “The reports themselves are not deleted — you can add them to another board any time.” Delete board confirms. If you delete the board you were looking at, Lurno moves you to the nearest board left in the list: the row above it, or the row below if it was the first.
- You can keep up to 20 boards. At the limit New board is disabled and says “You can have up to 20 boards.”
- You can’t delete your last board — Delete is disabled on it with “You need at least one board.” Rename or empty it instead.
Choosing where a report lands:
- On an “Ask your data” answer, Add to board is a split control. The main half pins to the board you added to last (your first board if you haven’t pinned anything yet); the arrow beside it — Choose a board — lists your boards so you can pick a different one, and offers New board to create one and pin the answer to it in a single step. A board made that way is called Untitled board until you rename it. Once it’s pinned, a View board → link takes you there.
- On a certified report’s own page, Add to board pins to your first board.
Working on a board:
- Drag a widget by its header to rearrange, and resize from its corner. Your layout saves automatically.
- Expand widget enlarges one widget to full width for a closer look and Collapse widget puts it back. That’s a view only — your saved arrangement doesn’t change.
- Remove from board takes a widget off after a confirm — this only unpins it; the report itself isn’t deleted and you can add it back any time.
- Each widget loads on its own. If one fails it shows a Retry in place rather than blanking the whole board.
Boards are per person and per organization — yours aren’t shared with your team, and switching organization shows you that organization’s boards.
Exporting to CSV
Section titled “Exporting to CSV”Every report, board widget, and “Ask your data” answer has an Export menu:
- Download CSV — saves what’s on screen right now. Choose the formatted version for spreadsheets or the raw version for re-importing into another tool. Each file carries a header noting when it was generated, the time zone, whether the number is certified, the sample size, and any small-group note.
- Export in background — for large reports. Lurno prepares the file and it downloads automatically when it’s ready (usually within a couple of minutes), with a notice in the corner. There’s a Download again option if your browser blocks the automatic download. Prepared files are available for 7 days.
No email is sent — exports appear as an in-app download.
Who sees what
Section titled “Who sees what”Everyone reads from the same certified numbers, scoped to what they’re allowed to see — so a learner, their guardian, and staff can never see different figures for the same person.
- Admins see organization-wide numbers across the full catalogue.
- Instructors see the same surfaces, scoped to their learners and courses.
- Learners get a My progress view — their own certified time on task, courses and items completed, and a 30-day trend. No reporting permission is needed to see your own progress.
- Guardians see their linked learners: each child’s on-track status and, on a child’s page, that child’s certified progress. Guardians only ever see children they’re verified for, and the view is read-only. See Guardians.
Why a number may be hidden
Section titled “Why a number may be hidden”Every chart has a footer showing a governance badge, when it was last updated (in your organization’s time zone), the sample size, and any small-group note. The badge is one of:
- Certified — the number came through a vetted metric.
- Ungoverned (AI) — an AI-proposed answer.
- Ungoverned — a non-certified metric.
Sometimes a report says “Nothing to show — either there is no data, or every group was too small to display without identifying someone.” That’s deliberate:
- Small groups are hidden. For sensitive measures, any group with fewer than a handful of distinct people is suppressed so individuals can’t be re-identified. Wellbeing uses a stricter threshold than academic reports.
- Only sensitive measures are suppressed. Operational and financial totals (enrolments, seats, AI spend) are never suppressed, so a genuinely small organization still sees its real numbers.
- Wellbeing shows lifecycle only. Case counts (open, past-SLA) are visible to case managers; no subject, category, mood, or case content is ever exposed in reporting.
- Times fall back to UTC with an “org clock unset” note until you set your organization’s time zone.
Reference
Section titled “Reference”| Term | What it is |
|---|---|
| Insights | The reporting hub (headline numbers + catalogue + Ask your data) |
| Certified report | A vetted report whose number resolves through one governed metric |
| Governed metric | The single definition behind a number, shared across every audience |
| Board | A private page of pinned reports and answers — up to 20 per person, per organization |
| My Boards | The navigation entry listing your boards, with create, rename and delete |
| Ask your data | Plain-language questions answered as charts (labelled Ungoverned/AI) |
| Provenance footer | The strip under a chart showing governance, freshness, sample size, and small-group note |
| Small-group suppression | Hiding groups too small to display without identifying someone |
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”I don’t see Insights or My Boards. The module is enabled per organization by Lurno and you also need permission to view reports. If your organization is on the rollout and you still can’t see it, check your permissions; otherwise ask us to enable it.
“New board” is greyed out. You’ve reached the limit of 20 boards. Delete or reuse one you no longer need.
I can’t delete a board. You can’t delete your last one — the reporting surface always keeps a board. Create another first, or rename and empty the one you have.
“Ask your data” is missing or says AI is turned off. The bar needs permission to use AI features and AI switched on for your organization. See AI tools.
A report is empty or says groups were too small. Either there’s no data for that view, or the groups were below the small-group threshold and were hidden to protect individuals. Widen the range or the audience and try again.
A number shows “—”. That’s a missing value, shown deliberately instead of 0 — often a view with no data yet, or a query that couldn’t load. Use Retry if it’s a widget.
My export didn’t download. Large exports run in the background and download when ready; if your browser blocked it, use Download again in the Export menu. Prepared files are kept for 7 days.
A learner’s number here differs from somewhere else. It shouldn’t — every surface reads the same governed metric. If you see a mismatch, it’s usually an older screen that predates certified reporting; the number in Insights is the governed one.
