Submissions & grading

The Submissions tab on an assignment is the working surface: who has handed in, who is late, who is missing, and what still needs marking.

A summary strip across the top counts Handed in · Late · Missing · Graded · Released, and each row carries the learner, their deadline, their status, when they handed in, where grading has got to, and the grade.

Rows show a status pill using the same words everywhere else in the product uses — Upcoming, Due soon, Overdue, Handed in, Handed in late, Missing, Exempt. Where a late penalty is configured, the row shows the suggestion (−10 % suggested) without applying it.

Missing is counted from who is enrolled, not from who opened the assignment. Someone who ignored it entirely still appears — which is the point.

Empty rosters say why: “Nobody is enrolled yet. Target this assignment at learners from the Enrollment tab and they’ll appear here.”

Open on a row brings up the grading drawer:

  • The hand-in itself — files download through a private link that only graders and the learner can use.
  • A late badge and the penalty suggestion where the work came in late.
  • Per-criterion scoring against the rubric, with a comment box on each criterion.
  • Overall feedback, written or as a voice note.
  • Private comments — a thread between the learner and the graders.

A rubric-scored hand-in is marked out of the rubric’s weighted maximum, and the version of the rubric used is pinned to the record — so editing a rubric later never silently re-scores work already marked against it.

Once released, the drawer switches to read-only and shows who graded it, with Edit grades if you need to go back.

Request revision returns the work with a note.

The learner keeps this hand-in, gets your note, and can submit again — the attempt limit does not apply to the resubmission.

Write what should change — be specific — and optionally set a new deadline. Leave the deadline empty to keep the current one.

The learner sees a banner: “Your teacher asked for changes”, with the new deadline where you set one, and a Resubmit button. The roster shows Revision requested, then Resubmitted when it comes back.

Because the resubmission doesn’t consume an attempt, a revision loop can’t accidentally lock somebody out of their own work.

Each hand-in carries a Comments thread:

Private to the learner and the graders.

Guardians never see it, on any assignment, at any point — including after release. It’s for the conversation about the work, not the record of it.

Two exports, both queued rather than downloaded on the spot:

  • Download roster (CSV) — the table as data.
  • Download all files (ZIP) — every hand-in.

Both go through the export queue, so a large assignment doesn’t hang your browser. You get “Preparing your download…”, then a notification when it’s ready. A ZIP too large to build says so and asks you to filter the roster first.

Revision requested Sent back, waiting on the learner
Resubmitted Came back after a revision
Graded Scored, not yet visible to the learner
Released Visible to the learner, and to a guardian where there is one

Somebody is missing from the roster. They’re not enrolled. Target the assignment at them from the Enrollment tab.

The file won’t download. Hand-in files are private and their links are short-lived. Reopen the drawer to mint a fresh one.

The learner can’t resubmit. Check the roster says Revision requested. Without a revision request, a learner who has handed in isn’t offered a second go from their list, by design.

A guardian is asking about a comment. They can’t see comments and never could. Anything a guardian should read belongs in the released feedback.

The ZIP export failed as too large. Filter the roster — by status, for instance — and export in parts.

I edited the rubric and old grades didn’t change. Correct. Each grade is pinned to the rubric version used at the time, so historical marks stay meaningful.
