Your profile, language & theme
Your account page holds who you are on Lurno — name, photo, pronouns, phone, language and time zone. Language is part of that form. Theme is not: light and dark are switched with a sun/moon button in the top bar.
What this does
Section titled “What this does”Your account page is a grid of cards, in this order: Profile, Sign-in & security, Notifications, Sessions, Privacy, Sharing access (only while you’re inside an organization), Organizations, Consents, Additional details. Selecting a card opens it; Back to overview returns to the grid.
This article covers the Profile card and the theme control. Your account settings are the same page in both shells: administrators reach it at /dashboard/account, people in the learner surface at /learn/account. Your profile is one record across every organization you belong to.
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”- Photos must be PNG, JPEG or WebP, and no larger than 2 MB.
- The Save changes button stays disabled until you actually change something.
- Your email address is shown on the Profile form but can’t be edited there. Change it under Sign-in & security — see Signing in.
Edit your profile
Section titled “Edit your profile”- Open Account from the menu under your name.
- Select the Profile card.
- Use Upload avatar to add a photo, or Remove to drop the one you have. Avatar changes save immediately, on their own.
- Fill in any of Given name, Family name, Display name, Pronouns, Phone.
- Select Save changes.
Display name is how your name appears across the app. Pronouns are optional and are shown next to your name only on surfaces that support them.
Nothing on this form is locked or greyed out because of a sign-in provider. The only value shown read-only is your email address, and that’s because it’s changed under Sign-in & security instead.
Set your language
Section titled “Set your language”Lurno’s interface ships in four languages: English, العربية (Arabic), Français and Italiano. There are two places to choose yours, and they write the same setting:
- Account → Profile → Language — a dropdown on the profile form, saved with Save changes.
- The Language picker in the menu under your name — in the admin shell it’s at the bottom of the sidebar, in the learner surface it’s in the avatar menu. Choosing there applies straight away.
Choosing Arabic also flips the whole interface to right-to-left.
Two things decide what you actually see:
- Your organization’s default language applies until you pick your own.
- If your organization has turned off “Allow users to change language”, the language picker in your menu is not shown at all, and the organization’s default language is used regardless of what the Profile form holds. The Profile form’s Language dropdown still saves your choice — it just doesn’t take effect until the organization allows overrides again.
Translation covers Lurno’s own interface text. Material someone wrote — a lesson, a question, an announcement — stays in the language it was written in. Separately, your organization can rename words like teacher or student per language; see Terminology.
Set your time zone
Section titled “Set your time zone”Account → Profile → Time zone offers the full list of time zones from your browser. It’s saved with the rest of the profile form. Leaving it on — means you have no personal time zone set.
Switch between light and dark
Section titled “Switch between light and dark”There is no theme option on the account page. Look for the sun/moon button in the top bar — it’s in the header of both the admin shell and the learner surface.
- Select the sun/moon button. The interface switches immediately.
- Select it again to switch back.
Three things are worth knowing:
- The control is a straight light↔dark toggle. There is no “Follow system” choice to pick. Before you ever use it, Lurno already follows your device’s light/dark setting; using the toggle replaces that with an explicit choice.
- Your choice is stored in the browser you’re using, not on your account, so a different computer or a different browser starts from your device setting again.
- If your organization has switched User Light/Dark Toggle off, the button is not rendered at all and the organization’s chosen mode is enforced.
Your organization’s branding — logo, colours, theme template — applies in whichever mode you’re in. See Branding & theming.
What other people can see
Section titled “What other people can see”Your name and photo are what people see, but whether people see you is a separate card. Account → Privacy carries the toggles: Show my profile in the directory, Show my email to other members, Allow others to find me by email, and a guardian message-visibility toggle. Administrators with access to personal data can still see you regardless.
Choose what AI may do with your data
Section titled “Choose what AI may do with your data”Account → Consents lists the policies your organization asks you to accept. Some are required; the AI ones are optional, and each is separate from the others so you can accept one and decline another.
| Consent | What accepting it allows | If you decline |
|---|---|---|
| AI assistance | Your typed questions can be sent to a third-party AI service to generate a reply. Covers the in-lesson tutor and the assistant. | AI features return “AI help is off. Turn on AI assistance in your privacy settings to use the tutor.” Nothing is sent anywhere. |
| Voice conversations | Your recorded voice can be sent to a third-party AI service so it can hear you and reply. | You can still use the assistant by typing. Only the microphone is unavailable. |
Voice is deliberately a separate policy rather than a clause inside AI assistance. Sending a typed question and sending a recording of your voice are materially different things — a recording identifies the speaker, and can capture whoever else is in the room — so accepting one does not accept the other, and you can withdraw either alone.
Voice audio is not stored. A written transcript is kept with your assistant conversations for 180 days and is covered by the same export and deletion rights as the rest of your account data.
Consent is recorded per policy version. If a policy’s wording is updated you’ll be asked again.
Reference
Section titled “Reference”| Setting | Where | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Avatar | Account → Profile (saves on upload) | Everywhere you appear |
| Given / Family / Display name, Pronouns, Phone | Account → Profile → Save changes | Everywhere you appear |
| Language | Account → Profile, or the Language picker in your menu | Only you — unless the organization has locked language |
| Time zone | Account → Profile → Save changes | Only you |
| Light / dark | Sun/moon button in the top bar | Only you, and only in that browser |
| Email address | Account → Sign-in & security | Your sign-in identity |
| Who can see you | Account → Privacy | Per organization directory visibility |
| AI assistance / Voice conversations | Account → Consents | Only you — withdrawable at any time |
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”There’s no Language picker in my menu. Your organization has turned off Allow users to change language, so everyone uses the organization’s default. An administrator changes it on My Organizations → your organization → Language Settings.
I picked a language on the Profile form and nothing changed. Check you selected Save changes, then reload. If the organization has locked language, the organization default is applied no matter what the field says.
There’s no sun/moon button. Your organization has turned off User Light/Dark Toggle on Org settings → Branding and is enforcing its own mode.
The theme reverted on my other laptop. Expected — the light/dark choice lives in the browser, not on your account. Set it once per browser.
Save changes is greyed out. Nothing has changed yet. The button only becomes active once a field differs from what’s saved.
My photo was rejected. Only PNG, JPEG and WebP are accepted, and the file must be under 2 MB.
My email won’t change on the Profile form. It isn’t editable there by design, and the hint under it — “Email is set by your sign-in method and can’t be changed here” — only means not on this form. Use Sign-in & security → Email address, which asks for your current password and emails a confirmation link to the new address.
