Handing in work

Some of your work isn’t a quiz — it’s something you make and hand in: an essay, a report, a recording, a file. This page is about that.

My assessments lists everything you have to do. Each row carries a date and a badge saying where you stand:

Badge Meaning
Upcoming It has a deadline, but not yet
Due soon The deadline is close
Overdue Past the deadline and you haven’t handed in
Handed in Done, on time
Handed in late Done, after the deadline
Missing Well past the deadline with nothing handed in

The To do filter narrows the list to what still needs you. Anything due also shows up in Up next on your home page and on your schedule, so you don’t have to go looking.

  1. Open the assignment. You’ll see the instructions, the deadline, and — where there is one — the rubric you’ll be marked against. Read it before you start; that’s what it’s for.
  2. Produce your answer:
    • A file — drop it in or browse for it. The screen tells you which types are allowed, the size limit, and how many files you can attach.
    • A written answer — type it, with a rough word count as guidance.
    • A recording — Record captures audio there and then; Record again replaces it. You can upload a recording instead.
  3. Check what you’ve attached, then Submit for grading. The confirmation asks you to hand in.

Your files are private. Only you and whoever marks your work can open them.

The row moves to Handed in, and your work waits to be marked. You won’t be offered a fresh start on the same assignment — if you need to change something, that goes through a revision (below).

When your grade is released you get a notification, and your result shows:

  • Your score, and whether you passed.
  • The rubric, criterion by criterion, with what you scored on each and any comment your marker left.
  • Overall feedback, written or as a voice note.
  • Where a file was part of your hand-in, a preview of it alongside the marks.

If the mark doesn’t look right, ask about it from the result. Your question is filed against that hand-in and answered there; the mark stays as it is until somebody replies. See Your assessments.

Where an AI assistant helped draft the grade, the result says so — “An AI assistant helped draft this grade. A person made the final decision.” You can decline AI involvement entirely in your privacy settings; see Profile, language & theme.

Your marker can send work back rather than grading it. You’ll see a banner:

Your teacher asked for changes

with their note about what to fix, a new deadline if they set one, and a Resubmit button. Your original hand-in stays where it is, and resubmitting doesn’t use up an attempt — the revision loop can’t lock you out.

Some questions inside a lesson are handed in too: Essay and Open response questions, Upload your work and Record your answer. You answer them in the lesson itself, the way the question allows — writing, files, a recording — and then select Submit for grading.

  • Your answer saves by itself once it meets the question’s rules, but it only reaches whoever marks it when you select Submit for grading.
  • Once handed in, the answer is locked and the question shows Handed in. When it’s been marked and the mark released to you, it shows Marked.
  • Each question is handed in once. If whoever marks it asks for changes, the question shows “Your teacher asked for changes” with their note. Change your answer and select Submit for grading again — your new hand-in replaces the one that was sent back.
  • Once marked and released, it appears in My results alongside everything else, named with its lesson and course.

For the details — word limits, which files each question takes, and recording in the browser — see Taking a course.

Each hand-in carries a Comments thread between you and whoever marks it.

Private to the learner and the graders.

Use it to ask about the brief or explain something about your submission. Nobody else sees it — not other learners, and not a parent or guardian, at any point.

Whether a passed deadline locks you out depends on how the work was set up.

  • Late hand-ins accepted — you can still hand in. It’s recorded and marked late, and whoever marks it decides what that means; there may be a penalty.
  • Late hand-ins not accepted — you’re refused, with “The deadline has passed and late work is not accepted.” Your row shows Deadline passed where Start would normally be, so you find out before you’ve written anything rather than after.

The assignment closing locks you out either way. After a close date you can’t open or hand in at all.

If you’re stuck against either, ask whoever set the work — they can extend your deadline without moving anyone else’s, and an extension lifts the refusal for you.

Thing Behaviour
Deadline Marks your work late. Stops you handing in only where late work isn’t accepted
Close date Always stops you — nothing can be handed in after it
Your files Private to you and your markers
Comments Private to you and your markers. Guardians never see them
Resubmitting after a revision Doesn’t count against your attempts
A question inside a lesson Handed in once with Submit for grading; opens again only if you’re asked for changes
Rubric Visible before you hand in, and scored after release
Extensions Whoever set the work can move your deadline without moving anyone else’s

The upload won’t accept my file. Check the type and size against what the screen lists. Where several files are allowed, there’s a limit on how many.

“Your organisation’s upload space for this month is used up.” Your organization has a monthly limit on submission storage. Ask an administrator — you can’t raise it yourself.

I handed in and want to change it. You can’t restart it yourself. Ask through the comments; whoever marks it can send it back for revision. A question you handed in inside a lesson stays locked too, until whoever marks it asks for changes.

The deadline passed and I can still hand in. Late hand-ins are accepted on that assignment. It’ll be marked late, and whoever marks it decides what that means.

My row says “Deadline passed” instead of “Start”. Late hand-ins aren’t accepted on that assignment and your deadline has gone. Ask whoever set it for an extension — that lifts it for you.

I can’t open it at all. It has closed, or it hasn’t opened yet. The screen says which.

My grade isn’t showing. It’s marked but not released yet. You’ll be notified when it is.

A parent asked me about a comment I wrote. They didn’t see it here — comments are private to you and your markers.
