Notifications & preferences
Your notification preferences are one card inside your account: two channel switches, a browser-push switch, five category switches, and an email digest setting. They apply to you alone.
This page is about choosing what reaches you. For the bell, the inbox and how read/unread works, see Your notification inbox. For what your organization sends and how those emails look, see Notifications (for admins).
What this does
Section titled “What this does”Lurno’s preference card has three levels, and they are not a grid. There is no per-category choice of channel.
- Channel switches decide whether a channel is used at all: Email notifications, In-app notifications, Browser push.
- Category switches — five of them — decide which kinds of message are sent. Four of them gate both the email and the matching bell notification; the fifth, Wellbeing check-ins, gates an in-app reminder only.
- Email digest decides whether reminder emails arrive one at a time or bundled.
Some messages ignore all of it. Password resets, welcome emails and other security-critical messages always send, and a set of essential in-app notifications always appears in your bell.
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”- The card is at Account → Notifications. Open Account from the menu under your name, then select the Notifications card.
- Nothing saves until you select Save. Cancel puts everything back to how you found it. The one exception is Browser push, which takes effect the moment you flip it.
- If you’ve never opened this card, everything is on by default and the digest is off.
Set your channels
Section titled “Set your channels”- Open Account → Notifications.
- Email notifications is the master switch for email. Turn it off and nothing below it sends by email — the four email categories grey out to make that obvious. Transactional email still sends.
- In-app notifications controls the bell. Turn it off and optional in-app alerts stop; essential ones still appear.
- Browser push subscribes this browser on this device to push notifications, after your browser asks for permission. It applies immediately and is per device, not per account.
- Select Save.
Choose your categories
Section titled “Choose your categories”Under the Categories heading there are exactly five switches:
| Category | What it covers | Channel it gates |
|---|---|---|
| Invitations | Emails inviting you to join an organization | Email (and matching in-app) |
| Guardianship | Confirmations, reminders and updates about shared-access relationships | Email (and matching in-app) |
| Role changes | When an administrator grants or revokes your role | Email (and matching in-app) |
| Learning content | New assignments, announcements and content from your courses | Email (and matching in-app) |
| Wellbeing check-ins | In-app reminders when a check-in is open | In-app only |
Wellbeing check-ins is deliberately independent of the email master switch. It gates an in-app reminder, not an email, so turning email off must never quietly take the check-in reminder with it — that switch stays live either way. Turning it off stops the reminder notification and hides the check-in banner, and nothing else: you stay in the programme, the check-in form is still on the Wellbeing page, and no consent is withdrawn. See Check-ins.
This is also the switch the check-in banner’s Turn off reminders button sets, so the two are one preference rather than two. If your reminders stopped after you used that button, here is where they come back: turn Wellbeing check-ins on and select Save.
Categories the platform uses internally — billing, transactional and lifecycle messages — have no switch, by design.
Turn off AI suggestions
Section titled “Turn off AI suggestions”If your organization has the AI assistant, this card is also where you switch off the suggestions it offers unprompted — per category, reversibly.
There are two different controls, and they don’t mean the same thing:
- ✕ on a suggestion is a snooze. That category comes back after 14 days. Snoozing the same one three times turns it off on its own.
- Turn these off is durable. It’s what this card reverses.
Both follow you rather than your browser, so a dismissal on your laptop holds on your phone and survives clearing your cookies.
Neither is a consent withdrawal. These decide whether Lurno shows you a card; the AI assistance consent in Account → Consents decides whether your data may be sent to an AI service at all. Full detail in Suggestions and interruptions.
Use the email digest
Section titled “Use the email digest”The Email digest row offers Off, Daily and Weekly.
- Off is the default: reminder emails arrive as they happen.
- Daily or Weekly bundles them into a single summary email instead.
Two constraints are enforced in the interface: the digest buttons are disabled unless both Email notifications and Learning content are on. That’s because the digest only ever bundles the reminder emails those settings produce — approaching assessment deadlines and newly unlocked modules. Everything else still sends normally, and the in-app bell stays instant either way.
Reference
Section titled “Reference”| Control | Effect | Saved by |
|---|---|---|
| Email notifications | Master switch for all optional email | Save |
| In-app notifications | Whether optional notifications reach your bell | Save |
| Browser push | Subscribes this browser/device | Applies immediately |
| Invitations / Guardianship / Role changes / Learning content | Which optional messages are sent | Save |
| Wellbeing check-ins | In-app check-in reminders; independent of the email switch | Save |
| Email digest (Off / Daily / Weekly) | Bundles deadline and unlock reminder emails | Save |
The labels on this card are fixed platform wording. Your organization’s terminology renames apply on other screens, but not here — so Guardianship stays “Guardianship” even if your organization calls those people something else.
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”I turned everything off and still get emails. Password resets, welcome emails and other security-critical messages bypass every preference. That’s intentional and can’t be switched off.
I turned in-app notifications off and the bell still shows things. A set of essential in-app notifications always delivers. See Your notification inbox.
The category switches are greyed out. Email notifications is off. Nothing sends by email while it is, so the per-category switches are shown disabled rather than pretending to be meaningful. Wellbeing check-ins stays available because it isn’t an email setting.
I turned reminders off from the check-in banner and want them back. The banner’s Turn off reminders button sets this card’s Wellbeing check-ins switch — there is no way back on from the banner itself, because the banner is what was hidden. Turn the switch on here and select Save. Nothing else changed in the meantime: turning reminders off never withdrew a consent or removed you from the programme.
The digest buttons won’t respond. They need both Email notifications and Learning content on. With either off there are no reminder emails left to bundle.
Browser push won’t switch on. Either the browser doesn’t support push — the row says so in place of the usual hint — or notifications are blocked for the site, in which case re-enable them in your browser’s site settings and reload. Push is per device: enabling it on your laptop doesn’t enable it on your phone.
My changes vanished. They were never saved. Everything except Browser push waits for Save; leaving the page first discards it.
I’m still not getting a particular email. Check the category is on, check Email notifications is on, check the address on your profile, and look in spam. If it’s affecting everyone in your organization it’s a delivery setting, not a preference — see Email from your domain.
