Community

Community is where you hear from your organization and talk to the people in it.

  • Announcements addressed to you — a closure, a deadline, something you need to know.
  • Spaces you belong to — your course, your year group, your team.
  • Messages with your teachers, where your organization allows it.

Some announcements ask you to confirm you’ve seen them. That’s a deliberate tap, not an automatic read receipt — it’s used for things where “I didn’t see it” matters, so do it when you’ve actually read it.

You may be reminded if you haven’t.

A space is a feed, a chat room, or a questions board.

  • Post in a feed by selecting Share something with this space above the posts. The editor opens there. Select Cancel, press Esc or click anywhere else to close it again; if you’ve already written something, Cancel asks before discarding it, and a click elsewhere leaves it open.
  • Reply and react to posts.
  • Mention somebody by picking their name from the list that appears as you type. You can only mention people who are in that space.
  • Vote in polls. Your vote is anonymous unless the person who made the poll had permission to make it attributable — and if it’s attributable, the poll says so before you vote.
  • Translate a post into your language, where your organization offers it.
  • Report anything that shouldn’t be there.

Choose what you hear about. Every space has its own setting: every post, only when somebody mentions you, or nothing at all. Some spaces are kept on by your organization, and say so.

In a busy room, there may be a wait between messages. That’s slow mode, and it’s automatic — it appears as a room grows and goes away when it’s quiet.

Where your organization allows anonymous posting, your name is hidden from other members — but moderators can always see who wrote what. Anonymous means anonymous to your classmates, not to your school.

Who you can message is decided by your organization, not by you. The list of people you can start a conversation with is already filtered — if it’s empty, it says so rather than leaving you searching.

Messaging other learners is switched off in schools. You’ll see: “You can message your teachers here. Messaging other students is turned off at this school.”

Read the notice at the top of a conversation

Section titled “Read the notice at the top of a conversation”

Some conversations are kept by your organization, and some can also be read by your guardians. The conversation tells you which, while you’re writing in it:

  • “This conversation is kept by your school.”
  • “This conversation is kept by the school and can be read by this student’s guardians.”

Nothing is archived or shared with a guardian without that notice being in front of you.

Where messages are checked before they’re delivered, the composer says so, and a held message tells you it hasn’t arrived yet rather than looking sent.

You’ll be given a reason, written to you by whoever removed it.

If you think it was wrong, you can appeal. Say why in your own words — there’s no form to follow — and somebody who wasn’t involved in the original decision reads it. You’ll be told the outcome.

If you write something that suggests you might be having a hard time, you may be shown support resources — a helpline, somebody to talk to.

That’s for you. It isn’t sent to your parents, and nothing about it is recorded or tracked.

Thing Behaviour
Who you can message Decided by your organization, and filtered before you search
Messaging other learners Off in schools
Archived conversations Disclosed in the conversation itself
Anonymous posting Hidden from members, never from moderators
Mentions Only people who are in that space
Polls Anonymous unless the poll says otherwise
Appeals Read by somebody not involved in the original decision
Support resources Learner-facing only; nothing recorded

There’s nobody I can message. Your organization’s settings don’t allow you to start a conversation with anyone right now.

My message says it’s with a moderator. Messages are checked before delivery in your organization. It’ll go once reviewed.

I’m being asked to wait between messages. Slow mode in a busy room. It eases off as the room quietens.

I can’t mention somebody. They’re not in that space.

It says I have new messages, but I’ve read them. A post counts as read once it has been on screen for about a second, or when you scroll to the end of the feed and stop there. Only posts from after you joined a space count as new. To clear a space straight away, open the ⋮ menu on its name and choose Mark as read.

My post disappeared. Either it was removed — you’ll have been given a reason — or it’s past your organization’s retention period.

I muted a conversation and still see messages. Muting stops notifications; messages still arrive.
