Glossary

This page defines the terms used across Lurno and this help center. Some of them your organization can rename; most it can’t. If a word below doesn’t match what you see in your account, check Terminology — and note that only a short, fixed list of terms is renamable at all.

People and places

Term	What it means
Organization	Your tenant on Lurno. It holds your people, content, branding and settings. A company, a SaaS academy, a university or a school each maps to one organization.
Sub-organization	A full child organization nested under another one, with its own people, programs, roles and branding. Used to separate departments, campuses, business units or customer accounts. Managed under My Organizations. See Sub-organizations & structure.
Group	A named set of people — a cohort, a class, a department, a team. Used to enrol or target many people at once. Groups in the navigation; that entry is fixed and can’t be renamed. See Groups.
Section	A separate, renamable term in the terminology catalogue (default label: Section). Renaming it does not rename the Groups page.
Guardian	A person linked to a learner who can see that learner’s information, typically a parent, sponsor or manager. Access is granted deliberately, not by default. See Guardians.
Permission	The right to perform one specific action — updating organization settings, viewing reports, inviting people. Permissions, not job titles, decide what you can do. See Roles & permissions.
Role	A named bundle of permissions assigned to a person. Lurno ships system roles that are the same everywhere and are read-only inside an organization; an organization can also create its own custom roles. Because role names differ per organization, this help center names the permission a task needs rather than a role.
Audience group	A grouping used to tailor the look and feel of the experience for a segment of your people — for example a different theme for younger learners.

Content and learning

Term	What it means
Program	The thing people enrol in and work through — a course, a training track, a curriculum, a certification path. Programs in the navigation.
Module	A section of a program that groups related lessons. (Not the same as a feature module — see below.)
Lesson	A single unit of learning content inside a module, built from blocks.
Block	The smallest building piece inside a lesson: text, an image, a video, an interactive element, a question. Added with Add block in the lesson editor. See Building a course.
Collection	A container in the Library that groups lessons, resources and assessments so they can be organized and reused. See Content library.
Resource	A media file learners see — video, audio, image, document, interactive. See Resources & media.
Source document	Reference material Lurno reads rather than learners: uploaded, parsed and indexed so AI generation and Q&A can be grounded in it. Sources in the navigation. See Document library.

Enrollment and scheduling

Term	What it means
Enrollment	The record that a person is taking part in a program or assessment. It carries their access, role, progress and status. See Enrollment overview.
Offering	The enrollable run of a program or assessment, with its own status (draft, published, closed, archived), who may join, a seat cap, an optional schedule and an optional cohort group. One program can have several. In the interface you mostly meet it as “turning enrollment on” for a program.
Roster	The list of people enrolled in an offering, with their status. The program’s own tab for it is labelled Enrolled people.
Schedule	The dates and release windows that decide when learning opens and closes. See Schedules & release windows.
Drip	Releasing content gradually over time rather than all at once. See Drip content.
Prerequisite	A condition someone must satisfy before they can start something. See Prerequisites.

Assessment and outcomes

Term	What it means
Assessment	A quiz, test, exam, assignment or graded activity. See Assessments overview.
Question	A single question or task inside an assessment. The reusable pool of them is the Question Bank, where they’re also referred to as items.
Grading	Scoring attempts and giving feedback — automatic, manual or peer. See Grading & feedback.
Certificate	A credential issued when someone meets the rules you define. Lurno separates the template (how it looks), the credential (what it certifies) and the rules that trigger it. See Certificates.
Competency	A specific skill or ability that content and assessments can map to, usually grouped into a framework. See Competencies & frameworks.
Insights	Lurno’s reporting area. It’s a module your organization is given by Lurno; while it’s off, the Insights and My Boards entries don’t appear. See Reporting.

AI

Term	What it means
Assistant	One conversation, reachable from every page, that answers from your own data under your own permissions and proposes changes you confirm. Opened with the Ask button or ⌘J. See Ask the assistant.
Scope	What a conversation is currently looking at — the whole organization, one program, one assessment, or your own courses. Shown on every conversation as “Looking at: …”.
Proposal	A change the assistant offers on a card. Nothing happens until you press Confirm.
Receipt	The record of a change the assistant actually made, with Undo where a real inverse exists. A convenience, not evidence — see Audit log.
Four eyes	A change that needs a second, different person to approve before it runs. Publishing and archiving a program work this way. See Approvals.
Source document	A document in Sources that AI generations draw on. Attached to a program once, or to a single assistant conversation. See Document library.
Grounding	Restricting what AI generates to the material you attached, rather than general knowledge. The Go beyond my documents switch in Create is the same idea in reverse.
Abstention	The assistant declining to state a figure the data it read doesn’t support, and saying so, instead of guessing.
Tutor	In-lesson help on a single question, governed by enrollment rather than staff permissions. See Help & wellbeing.
Disclosure	The line every AI surface carries saying the content is AI-generated. A legal transparency obligation, not a preference.
AI assistance consent	The optional per-person policy that allows typed questions to reach an AI service.
Voice processing consent	A separate optional per-person policy covering recorded voice. See Voice conversations.

How availability is decided

Term	What it means
Subscription package	The plan Lurno assigns to your organization. It sets hard limits (maximum members, sub-organizations, collections, lesson plans) and a small set of feature switches. There is no billing or upgrade screen in the product.
Feature module	A product area that can be switched off for a whole organization, independent of anyone’s permissions: Programs, Library, Audience groups, Branding, Lesson plans, Custom domains, Wellbeing. In practice only Programs and Library are meaningfully enforced. Insights is a separate module Lurno enables. See Plans, permissions & modules.
Terminology	Your organization’s own labels replacing a short list of Lurno’s default words, per language. See Terminology.

A note on renaming

Only the terms in Lurno’s terminology catalogue can be renamed, and only the ones Lurno marks as customizable: teacher, student, parent, guardian, curriculum, grade, section, and my learning. Two more sit in the catalogue but ship locked — classroom and subject — so they don’t appear in the editor at all.

Everything else on this page — program, module, lesson, block, collection, assessment, offering, enrollment, certificate, competency — is fixed platform vocabulary that cannot be changed. This help center always uses the platform defaults.
